What can we learn from our experiences of the past 15 months? What lessons can we draw from the history, culture, and politics of the Middle East to inform our much needed solidarity movement?

This series of teach-ins, featuring academics, activists, writers, and artists, attempts to ground our understanding of this moment in vital historical and cultural context, while inviting participants to explore connections between our struggles here in Philadelphia with the struggles of people in the region.

Join us Sunday, February, 2-4pm for a teach-in with Zaina Yasmin Dana on Palestinian Representation on the Stage. Zaina will discuss the evolution of Palestinian representation on the stage in in the US, examining both contemporary performances and the historical context of adaptation within political movements. Attendees will gain insights into how classical and contemporary theater can be used to elevate political voices for Palestine with a focus on performance as a tool for political expression and social change.

Zaina Yasmin Dana is a Palestinian director and organizer based in North Philadelphia. She is the Resident Director of Eat Purple Theater Co., a new theater-making collective in the city. Her recent production of American Fast by Kareem Fahmy at InterAct Theater was nominated for a Barrymore award for Outstanding Original Production. Previous world-premiere projects include Johann Johann: or thee wurst dinner partie, Facepaint, and R3TURN: A Palestinian Pop-Punk Musical. She dedicates the rest of her time to uplifting the plight of Palestinian refugees through her work with UNRWA and UNRWA USA as the Project Manager of the Gaza 5K walk/run for mental health. Recipient of “Al-Bustan Award for SWANA Artists,” she is also a part of the 6th cohort of the Roundabout Director’s group.
