What can we learn from our experiences of the past 15 months? What lessons can we draw from the history, culture, and politics of the Middle East to inform our much needed solidarity movement?

This series of teach-ins, featuring academics, activists, writers, and artists, attempts to ground our understanding of this moment in vital historical and cultural context, while inviting participants to explore connections between our struggles here in Philadelphia with the struggles of people in the region.

Join us Sunday, January 26, 2-4pm for a teach-in with Dr. Raz Segal on Settler Antisemitism, the Holocaust, and the Twisted Road to Gaza. Dr. Segal will address three related issues. First, he will trace the emergence of antisemitism as a specifically modern phenomenon at the intersection of the nation-state system and European imperialism and colonialism, culminating in the Holocaust. He will then show how Israel as a settler nation-state also functions according to the logic of what he calls settler antisemitism. While the racialization of Jews in the frame of White supremacy in other settler-colonial states could include Jews as immigrant settlers but never more, White supremacy in Israel has manifested itself as Jewish supremacy, which defined the project of creating a White Jewish settler society. Israel's genocide in Gaza is Israeli settler colonialism taken to its (il)logical conclusion. The final part will discuss the weaponization of Holocaust memory, including the weaponization of the struggle against antisemitism, as an integral part of Israel's genocidal assault against Palestinians and of the unconditional support the US extends to Israel.

Dr. Raz Segal is an Associate Professor of Holocaust and Genocide Studies and Endowed Professor in the Study of Modern Genocide at Stockton University. Dr. Segal has held a Harry Frank Guggenheim Fellowship and a Fulbright Fellowship, and he was recently a Senior Fellow at the Vienna Wiesenthal Institute for Holocaust Studies (2023) and a recipient of the Baron Velge Award for his work on the history of World War II (2024). He is at work on a book on the distortion, weaponization, and mobilization of Holocaust history in the reproduction of white supremacy and state violence, including a focus on Israel’s assault on Palestinians from the 1948 Nakba to the current genocidal assault on Gaza. In addition to scholarly publications, he has published op-eds, book reviews, and larger articles on genocide, state violence, and memory politics in Hebrew, English, and German.
