What can we learn from our experiences of the past 15 months? What lessons can we draw from the history, culture, and politics of the Middle East to inform our much needed solidarity movement?

This series of teach-ins, featuring academics, activists, writers, and artists, attempts to ground our understanding of this moment in vital historical and cultural context, while inviting participants to explore connections between our struggles here in Philadelphia with the struggles of people in the region.

In this interactive workshop, we will explore ways student activists have positioned themselves to increase the visibility and influence of the movement for Palestinian liberation here in the U.S. and, by extension, other international solidarity movements as well. Together, participants will examine characteristics of contemporary student organizing in support of Palestinian liberation in order to understand the powerful role American youth can play in amplifying and strengthening international solidarity movements. We will also analyze the potential long term impacts of the violent suppression of anti-Zionist speech by American universities and the bipartisan political establishment over the past year and a half, the results of which have already become evident in many universities' responses to the Trump administration’s attacks on institutional DEI initiatives. As a whole, this workshop will offer a critical, but also hopeful and strategic, vision of what is possible when we support youth collective action in solidarity with Palestine.

Dr. Sonia M. Rosen is a teacher educator and scholar of youth and teacher activism in the U.S. She co-edited the book Contemporary Youth Activism: Advancing Social Justice in the United States (2016) with Dr. Jerusha Conner. A proud Arab-American, Sonia previously served on the Board of Directors of Playgrounds for Palestine and has had various affiliations with Al-Bustan Seeds of Culture. She currently works as an Adjunct Associate Professor and Associate Director of the Independent School Teaching Residency program in the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education and serves as a member of the founding Board of Directors of Freedom Side School.
