We are Opera by the Glass, a new arts collective in the heart of Tkaronto that believes opera and wine share a common soul: a sincere essence focused on gathering and storytelling. Our upcoming event explores the questions: How does where you are from resonate in your voice? How do your ancestral roots echo in the stories you tell?

Opera by the Glass is thrilled to present Songs of Home: A Toast to Deantha. This wine and song pairing focuses on Inuk Soprano Deantha Edmunds and her journey—from reconnecting to her Moravian Inuit ancestry to creating the classically inspired modern Inuit music that shares the richness of her identity.

Deantha Edmunds is a visionary. She is the first classical Inuk soprano recognized in Canada, a Juno Award winner, and a recipient of the Order of Canada. Beyond her accolades as a performer, composer, and director, she is an Indigenous knowledge bearer and a dedicated educator, from private voice to her work with the Arctic Rose Foundation.

Originally from Quispamsis, New Brunswick, Soprano Lauren Estey Jovanovic had the honour of studying voice with Deantha during her high school years. In a true full-circle moment, Lauren recently completed her DMA at the University of Toronto, centering her research on Deantha’s contributions to reconciliation through music. Together, they have curated a programme that highlights their unique connection, remembering the Wolastoq River that once united their paths. Pianist Ivan Estey Jovanovic and your Host Stephen Carr will guide our storytelling, finding resonance between our music and wine selections.

While "terroir" is a staple of wine talk, we ask: what about the deeper connection to the land? How do we understand the history of viticulture in Canada, from settler varietals to Indigenous grapes? Opera by the Glass brings these questions forward as Advanced Sommelier Nabilah Rawji mindfully selects three wines that echo our musical programme, focusing on sustainability, reciprocity, and respect for the earth.
