Behind the Apron: Creative Sustenance is an intimate cooking workshop exploring the creative practice of Nigerian home cooking with Titilope Sonuga.

📍 Location: The Kitchen at Stanley Milner Edmonton Public Library (Sir Winston Churchill Square Northwest, Edmonton, AB, Canada)

🎟 Tickets: $40 per person

A limited number of barrier-free tickets are available to support accessibility for Black creatives.

What to Expect

Creative Sustenance offers a behind-the-scenes exploration of the Nigerian ancestral recipes that have nourished Titilope Sonuga’s creative practice for generations.

What flavours satisfy her cravings for home and familiarity?
How have key ingredients migrated or adapted on the lands of Amiskwaciy-wâskahikan?
What makes these foods essential to her creative process and flow?

Participants will begin the afternoon with pastries from Rosewood Foods / Lochi Afro Nija while being welcomed into the space and introduced to the flow of the day.

From there, we will move to our cooking stations where Titilope will guide participants through preparing an authentic Nigerian home-cooked meal. Nigerian cooking is slow, intentional, and rooted in ancestral care. Certain components will be prepared in advance to ensure a rich experience within our four-hour gathering.

Together, we will prepare:

Jollof Rice
Oven Roasted Pepper Fish
Fried Plantain
A special Nigerian sweet surprise

As the meal finishes, Titilope will guide a facilitated group conversation on restorative practices that fuel creativity — including the ancestral foods and rituals that sustain us.

We will close by enjoying the meal we’ve prepared together, returning the kitchen to its original state, and packing up leftovers. (Please bring a container.)

Who is This For?

This workshop is intentionally created for Black creatives in the city.

We invite you to bring the aunties, friends, and chosen family who sustain your own creative practice.

At this time, we ask that anyone who does not identify as a Black creative refrain from purchasing tickets in honour of the intention of this offering. If seats remain closer to the event date, registration may be opened more broadly.

About Feed the Soul YEG

Feed the Soul YEG is a year-round initiative dedicated to elevating, strengthening and celebrating the diversity of Edmonton's ethnocultural food establishments.

This grassroots organization was created by a volunteer-led and driven team dedicated to promoting and offering safe spaces for local Black-, Indigenous- and racialized-owned businesses to expand their presence in the city. This is done through year-round programming including our Black Futures Month Dining Week, Ten Dolla Deals affordable meals, food tours, pop-ups and catering.

About Titilope Sonuga

Titilope Sonuga is a globally renowned poet, playwright, and performer. She is the author of three poetry collections — Down to Earth, Abscess, and This Is How We Disappear — and two spoken word albums, Mother Tongue and Swim.

Her work blends elegance of craft with a deeply human quality, leading her to script campaigns for global organizations. She served as an ambassador for Intel’s She Will Connect campaign and has written three plays: The Six, Naked, and Ada the Country.

Titilope was the first poet to perform at a Nigerian presidential inauguration (2015) and served as the ninth Poet Laureate of the City of Edmonton (2021–2023).
