In a world facing unprecedented environmental challenges, educators play a crucial role in preparing future generations to think critically and act responsibly. This webinar presented by Humber Polytechnic professor Anke Föller-Carroll, PhD ABD, will provide educators with practical tools and strategies to incorporate sustainability into their teaching across subjects.

During the session, Anke will share how she incorporates sustainability throughout her tourism courses and discuss how each of her approaches are equally as applicable in any other program. Tourism was declared by the UN as a “Force for Peace” (2015) and while it most certainly holds the potential for mutual learning and understanding, growth, and friendship, it also comes with an alarmingly high carbon footprint, imbalanced profit opportunities, and notions of neocolonialism. Through applied learning in and out of the classroom supported by field trips, debates, and practical assignment, Anke’s teaching is centred around critical thinking and empowerment.

This session will show a snapshot of teaching methods and content pieces throughout several of Anke’s courses that can be easily applied to other subject areas, followed by a Q&A opportunity.

About the facilitator

Anke Föller-Carroll is a settler-immigrant from Germany, who has made Canada her home for the past 30 years. She had been working in the tourism industry for two decades when she began teaching at the post-secondary level in 2008. Since then, her academic journey included an MBA through the University of Guelph, where she was first introduced to formal education in sustainability. The “P as in People” of the triple bottom line has particularly piqued her interest, leading her to publish her master thesis research on Voluntourism conducted with Humber Students. Anke is currently in the last year of her doctoral program at the University of Waterloo, where she has built a relationship with an Indigenous community over the past three years, and reflects on the perspective of Indigenous Tourism entrepreneurs through the lens of decolonial theory and critical pedagogy.
