Born and raised in Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory, Dr. Kiera Brant-Birioukov (Kaia’tano:ron) is a Mohawk educator, researcher, writer, and academic whose work bridges community-based learning and post-secondary education. She is the co-founder and Principal Consultant of Ridge Road Training & Consulting, a Haudenosaunee educational consulting firm based in Tkaronto. With a decade of experience teaching in Indigenous education and a PhD in Curriculum Studies from the University of British Columbia, Dr. Brant-Birioukov’s work explores Indigenous educational research, curriculum theory, and community engagement.

In this professional development session for faculty, Beyond the Myth: Educational Value of Indigenous Oral Histories in the Classroom, participants will explore Indigenous oral histories as living practices of knowledge-sharing that extend far beyond the “myths” and “legends” often presented in Western education. Dr. Brant-Birioukov will share the richly layered Haudenosaunee Creation story of Sky Woman, illuminating how oral traditions carry vital epistemologies that shape culture, identity, and collective memory.

Faculty will be invited to reflect on the ethical responsibilities involved in teaching oral knowledge and consider how to move beyond tokenism toward meaningful, relational engagement. Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of how to respectfully and thoughtfully integrate Indigenous oral histories into their teaching practice.
