Nov 5 - Module 1 - General Overview

In this introductory session, we will provide an overview of the general process for applying to faculty jobs, including components of the application and timelines. This session will also introduce the “From Postdoc to Faculty Crash Course” and what you can expect from each of our subsequent sessions during the 2025/26 academic year. Finally, we will look at EDI/DEI elements and some best practice tips on incorporating these into your faculty job applications.

Nov 27 - Module 2 - CV and Cover Letters

Creating a compelling CV and cover letter can catch the attention of a search committee and elevate your chances of landing an interview. In this virtual workshop, attendees will learn how to craft an informative CV and how to tailor a cover letter for faculty or research-based roles.

Jan 22 - Module 3 - Research Statement

This seminar will provide guidance on preparing a compelling research statement for faculty applications in the health sciences. We will discuss considerations and guiding principles for summarizing research to date, articulating a clear program of research and future vision, and highlighting collaborations and scholarly impact. The session will offer practical strategies for creating a statement that effectively communicates skills, expertise, and contributions in a competitive academic environment.

Feb 18 - Module 4 - Teaching Dossier

In addition to demonstrating excellence in research, applicants for faculty positions must highlight their qualifications and philosophy for teaching in a teaching dossier. In this virtual workshop, facilitators from the University of Toronto’s Centre for Teaching Support & Innovation will help attendees to understand what a teaching dossier is, what makes an effective teaching dossier, and how to build one.

March 24 2026 - Module 5 - Interviewing

** Please note that this session will be held in-person at Mount Sinai Hospital, 600 University Avenue in Toronto.

Join us to learn about what to expect when interviewing for an academic faculty position. Researchers and faculty search committee members will go over the structure of an academic interview, the parties typically involved in the process and how to prepare for your interview.

April 2026 - Module 6 - Chalk Talk

Join us for an informative session that will discuss the often-intimidating yet important component of many academic job interviews – the chalk talk. The chalk talk is an opportunity to pitch your future research ideas, while also being asked questions about feasibility, funding, training plans, and long-term goals in real-time by your interview panel. These are used frequently in science faculty searches and can be very daunting components of the in-person visit. Career development experts from SickKids and St. Michael’s Hospital will share practical advice on how to prepare effectively and confidently and the session will also feature a demo Chalk Talk to help set you up for success.

May 7 - Module 7 - Negotiation

Job negotiation is a critical step in securing your first faculty position and the resources needed to thrive as a new faculty member. In this session, LTRI and SMH researchers will provide strategies to negotiate effectively ensuring your goals and values align with the institute. You will also gain practical guidance on navigating the key components of a faculty offer, from salary and start-up funds to teaching responsibilities and more, so you can confidently negotiate an offer letter that will enable the successful launch of your research program and set you up for success in your faculty position.

May 2026 - Module 8 - Networking Event

To close the Postdoc to Research Faculty Crash Course, the participating sites are excited to offer an in-person networking event! Postdoctoral fellows from across Toronto are invited to connect and explore research career options by meeting recently hired faculty from hospitals and universities across the GTA. This in-person event will feature a round-table networking format, with refreshments provided. This will be an enriching opportunity for PDFs to enhance their career development and network with career professionals and peers across Toronto!
