THE SHOWMEN is a documentary that spends a full year with World’s Finest Shows, who you may recognize as the midway operators at the Norfolk County Fair, just around the corner from our front door! World's Finest Shows operates over 50 rides, game booths, and food kiosks and is one of the premiere travelling carnivals in North America.

Beginning in January during the off-season, you'll see the crucial processes of event organization, acquiring necessary permits, and managing staff, as the carnival leadership lays the groundwork for a year of vibrant festivals and fairs. Then, you'll hit the road with the carnival for six months of non-stop work. "Set up, tear down, set up, tear down" goes the refrain, which you'll hear a few times in the documentary if you listen closely to the soundtrack. Fittingly, the last stop on the tour is a place near and dear to many hearts here in Norfolk County: the fairgrounds on the corner of Queen and South on Thanksgiving weekend.

Viewers will meet the showmen, historically called “carnies”, and will learn how yesterday's insults have been replaced with more respectful terminology that reflects the passion and expertise the showmen bring to their rides, games, and food kiosks. The documentary also delves into the rich heritage of the midway, tracing its roots back to 1893 while shedding light on the financial realities of carnival operations. You'll get real numbers as the documentary goes on, showing the carnival's various costs for attractions, labour, insurance, permits, and maintenance. THE SHOWMEN is the newest documentary from Simcoe filmmaker Daryl Granger, who released NETTING THE WATERS in 2024 and YOUNG FARMER in 2026. Both documentaries were acclaimed and awarded internationally and played for multi-month engagements at the Strand.
