About the show: When her father dies unexpectedly, graphic novelist Alison dives deep into her past to tell the story of the volatile, brilliant, one-of-a-kind man whose temperament and secrets defined her family and her life. Moving between past and present, Alison relives her unique childhood playing at the family’s Bechdel Funeral Home, her growing understanding of her own sexuality, and the looming, unanswerable questions about her father’s hidden desires. About the company: TotoToo Theatre is a registered, not-for-profit Ottawa-based theatre company committed to providing safe spaces for 2SLGBTQI+ performers, volunteers, and allies to create art together. TotoToo strives to present works written by queer artists and are committed to shows rooted in queer culture or content. TotoToo is open to non-traditional casting opportunities and warmly welcomes everyone regardless of their gender, sexual identity, race, or religion.

Casting Information:

The artistic team is looking for great singers with strong acting skills and a collaborative spirit for this extraordinary musical.
All actors auditioning for adult roles must be 18 or older at the time of auditions. All actors auditioning for youth roles (Small Alison, Christian, and John) must be 8+ at the time of auditions.
Youth roles may be cast older than "stage age" - young performers ages 8-14 are encouraged to audition.
Roles may be double cast and/or understudies may be cast.
Auditions will be by appointment only and booked in 10-minute individual slots, featuring a singing and acting component; there will be no dance call at the initial auditions.
Actors are asked to please share all conflicts on their audition form; other than for illness or emergency, undisclosed and/or new conflicts are subject to the approval of the team.
Please note that “Fun Home” deals with mature subject matter. The artistic team is committed to ensuring these themes are handled in a safe and sensitive manner for all actors, including those under 18.
Note for families: If your child loves to sing, act, and tell meaningful stories, this is a wonderful opportunity to be part of something truly special. "Fun Home" offers a supportive, professional environment where young performers can shine alongside an experienced creative team.

SHOW DATES: May 14 to May 23, 2026 at The Gladstone Theatre

AUDITION DATES: November 14-16, with possible callbacks on the evening of November 17.

Friday, November 14: 6-10 PM
Saturday, November 15: 11 AM-4 PM
Sunday, November 16: 10:30 AM-2 PM
Monday, November 17: Callbacks, if needed, by invitation only starting at 6 PM. Please note that there will be a dance component at the callbacks.
Wednesday, December 3: 7-10 PM First read/sing-thru
Wednesday, January 14: First rehearsal (TBC)

AUDITION/REHEARSAL LOCATION: TotoToo Theatre, 141 Bentley Ave., Unit F (please follow the signs, and enter through the rear doors.) Free parking is available onsite.

REHEARSALS: Rehearsals will normally take place three days per week at the TotoToo space starting in mid January 2026, with additional and/or longer rehearsals added closer to the show dates. Rehearsals are tentatively planned for Monday (7-10), Wednesday (7-10) and Saturday (1-5) - TotoToo reserves the right to amend the rehearsal schedule. Please note that youth performers will normally finish rehearsal by 9 PM, except closer to the show.

ALISON – 43 years old, a lesbian cartoonist (Vocal Range: E3-D5)

MEDIUM ALISON* – 19 years old, a college freshman (Vocal Range: G3-E5)

SMALL ALISON – around 9 years old (Vocal Range: A3-E5)

BRUCE BECHDEL* – Alison’s father (Vocal Range: A2-G4)

HELEN BECHDEL – Alison’s mother (Vocal Range: A3-E5)

CHRISTIAN BECHDEL – Alison’s older brother, around 10 years old (Vocal Range: C#4-D5)

JOHN BECHDEL – Alison’s younger brother, around 6 years old (Vocal Range: C#4-E5)

JOAN* – a college student (Vocal Range: G3-G4)

ROY* – a young man Bruce hires to do yard work (Vocal Range: G3-A4 (opt. D#5))/MARK* – a high school junior/PETE – a mourner/BOBBY JEREMY – an imaginary TV character

Notes:

All ages listed are “stage age.”
The character of Alison is portrayed by three different performers.
The roles of Roy, Mark, Pete, and Bobby Jeremy are typically performed by the same actor.
All performers are encouraged to listen to the full “Fun Home” soundtrack (available on all major streaming platforms) to gain a better understanding of the plot, characters, feel, and unique structure of this musical.
*Character has potential moments of scripted intimacy with another character on stage. This staging will be thoughtfully guided by the principles of Intimacy Direction, and open communication and consent will be prioritized throughout the rehearsal process.

Preparing for your Audition:

The artistic team would like you to prepare one minute from a musical theatre song of your choice (approximately 16-32 bars), which demonstrates your storytelling skills. (Please choose a piece which is not from “Fun Home.”) Youth performers are welcome to choose any song that they feel comfortable with!
Auditionees should provide legible sheet music in the correct key with the piano accompaniment included and the cuts (starting and ending points) clearly marked (lead sheets not accepted).
Auditionees are strongly encouraged to upload/email their sheet music when they book their audition.
A professional piano accompanist will be provided at the audition: no recordings, a capella auditions, or self-accompaniment will be permitted.
Sides are now available by clicking here. Please prepare one side (no need to fully memorize) for your audition. It is recommended to look over all sides as the artistic team may ask you to read for another character.

Audition Essentials to bring:

Please wear clothes and footwear that you can move in comfortably.
A water bottle.
A printed copy of the piano sheet music for your selected music in your preferred key.
Time to check in - Please arrive 10 minutes before your audition time.
Youth performers are encouraged to bring only one parent/guardian with them. A waiting area will be provided, but space is limited.
